We are expecting 1500 - 2000 competitors to take part from over 20 countries and over 100 tug of war clubs from home and abroad to take part in the open club competition.
Tug of war teams train all year around. Competitors (known as "pullers") do individual training in the gym to improve strength and conditioning and will practice tug of war with their teams. Most clubs have a large weight and pulley system where teams develop teamwork by moving a weight up and down a training rig in unison. Below is an image taken in the 1950's of a tug of war team lifting up an agricultural roller on a pulley system fixed to a tree! Facilities have evolved a lot since then with most clubs having purpose built pulley systems on steel frame towers.
